Entrepreneurship in the Face of Adversity

Also could be titled: You don't ever really quit. Verdant Synergies' CEO Gabe Grass shares thoughts on how entrepreneurship isn't what you do so much as what you are.

Entrepreneurship has a funny way of sticking with you. You can sell the business, close the doors, change careers, swear you’re “done with that life” – and yet, somehow, it never really leaves. Entrepreneurs can never be referred to as 'former entrepreneurs.’ We just take breaks, gather scars and occasionally pretend we enjoy stability.

For Saralyn and me, Verdant Synergies isn’t a return to entrepreneurship so much as a continuation of it. GrassLands Brewing Company was our first real plunge: different industry, different stakes, different lessons learned the hard way. What hasn’t changed is the wiring. The compulsion to build. The refusal to accept “that’s just how it is.” The tendency to look at complexity and think, yeah, but we could make this better.

Entrepreneurship often shows up most clearly in moments of adversity. When plans fall apart. When roles end unexpectedly. When doors close without explanation or courtesy. Those moments tend to clarify whether entrepreneurship was something you did or something you are. If it’s the latter, adversity doesn’t end the story, it just forces a rewrite.

Said rewrite is rarely glamorous. It’s not keynote-worthy. It looks like late-night conversations, legal pads full of half-baked ideas and the quiet realization that you’re about to bet on yourselves…again. Not because it’s easy or trendy, but because it’s the only option that feels honest.

Verdant Synergies exists because we’ve lived on both sides of leadership; building organizations, leading teams, navigating systems that don’t always reward integrity or competence equally. We’ve seen what works, what fails quietly and what collapses spectacularly. More importantly, we’ve learned how to help others navigate those realities with clarity instead of chaos.

Despite the similarities in our logo (as some of you have already pointed out) this venture looks nothing like GrassLands, and that’s the point. Entrepreneurship isn’t about repeating the same playbook. It’s about applying the same mindset to new problems.

Different field, same instincts.

Different tools, same grit.

Different risks, same responsibility.

Adversity has a way of stripping things down to essentials. Ego fades. Titles lose their shine. What’s left is experience, perspective and a sharpened sense of purpose. That’s where real entrepreneurship lives…not in hype, but in resilience and adaptability.

We’re back in the mix because building is what we do. Helping others navigate complexity, recover momentum and move forward with confidence is what we’re good at. Verdant Synergies isn’t a pivot born of necessity but a recommitment to the work we’ve always been doing, just with better clarity and fewer illusions.

If there’s a lesson here, it’s a simple one: entrepreneurship doesn’t end when a chapter closes. It evolves. And sometimes, the most meaningful work comes after you’ve been knocked down enough times to know exactly what you’re building and why.

'Til next time!
